About Canaan Sleeps
A Christian YA Dystopia Novel
Shiloh, the burgeoning Christian capital of the west, is celebrating a new dawn as Arch Prophet Kaynen Kafaana takes office. But not everyone is rejoicing in ‘God’s new mouthpiece‘. Over the excitement and rapid-development of this urban heaven-on-earth, a sinister shadow hangs.
Adam, Ruth, and Thomas have been close friends since early childhood. Despite their parents’ schemes to set them on a course for power and wealth, Adam, Ruth, and Thomas are united by a passion to know God and do his will. But that’s easier said than done in a city built on the backs of prophets who preach a different gospel.
Meanwhile, across the sea, in the belly of the hostile Eastern Empire, a lonely prophet, calling himself Theophilus, sits in a dank prison cell and writes. He madly scribbles a message from God to Shiloh. The ruthless warden thinks Theophilus is just another crazy fanatic from the west—that is, until he and his family start having dreams. The message must reach Adam, Ruth, Thomas and the other faithful remnants in Shiloh before the unspeakable happens. A catastrophe like the world has not seen in 800 years.

Cyrus,
a pawn of the Eastern Empire
I was born to serve the Holy Emperor and defend the Eastern Empire. At least, that’s what I thought throughout my career in the regime secret police. Tracking down and terminating western heretics was my specialty, but now I think I might be one. After I met my now wife Teresa, things started to change in ways I didn’t expect. I had been trained to be fearless, with an iron resolve, willing to risk anything for my God’s anointed emperor. But now I’m doubting if I had any of it right. I’d like to say it was just nerves, worrying about my Teresa and our little boy, but I know that’s not it. I know exactly when things changed. It all started with that dream… the forbidden dream Teresa and I share. The regime would kill me if they knew what I saw. Jesus, but not as another human prophet. Christ ruling on His throne—one with God.
Ruth,
the aristocrat runaway
Smile, be polite, keep your head down, and most of all, don’t ask questions. That’s the life of a governor’s daughter, and I’m sick of it. From what mother tells me, I’ll soon be condemned to the academy to waste the next four years of my life being trained in all the absurdities and niceties of political life. I know if I told mother what I really wanted to do, she’d probably check me into an insane asylum.
After I met Adam, my whole sad world was transformed into beauty and hope. The way he would talk about God, about a kingdom not built by hands, and about the way of the cross… It felt like being born again! From the horrible things my parents say about “half-breeds” like Adam, there’s no way they would understand my intentions. I’ve written them a letter for when I leave. I only hope my brother Thomas can forgive me.
Thomas,
the patriotic zealot
All my life I’ve been told who I’m supposed to be. I’ve been cloistered in a velvet-lined box when all I want to do is prove myself—to God and my country. I realize now I’ve been a coward from the start, hiding in my mother’s shadow, playing the part of the perfect, gentle and meek Christian boy.
But now I see that gentleness and meekness get you nothing in Shiloh, let alone the savage world outside. I’ve seen what comes of that kind of subtle, cheek-turning Christianity and I want nothing to do with it! My God loves freedom and justice at any cost, so that’s what I’m going to seek first. If God has a kingdom in this world, we have to win it back from these soft, poisonous pretenders. And if I’m wrong? Well, God always forgives, doesn’t he?

Phinehas is the Arch Prophet of Shiloh, meaning he is the holy city’s mouthpiece for God. But, as the city celebrates a hundred years of peace, Phinehas has a crisis of faith—one that may cost him his life. Phinehas can see through the hypocritical facade of this ‘Christian’ utopia he’s helped to build, but will they listen to the true gospel of Christ, or purge him as a traitor?
